A weekly discussion forum concerning various social and political issues facing America at the time. The regular panel for this show included a number of prestigious guests, including publishers, university professors and former military officials, who would debate topics such as the state of the American government, the nation's role in foreign conflicts, etc.

Three of Ernest Thompson's short plays are presented, each involving a surprise visitor. In the first, "A Good Time," a vacationing California Highway Patrolman visits a young woman in New York who had told him if he ever came to New York, she'd show him a good time. In the second, "The Constituent," a United States Senator drops in on a constituent who has been sending him scathing and profane letters for decades. Lastly, in "Twinkle, Twinkle," a restless housewife who has been writing fan letters to a television soap opera star, receives a surprise visit by him on her husband's bowling night.

"Americans" is a short 'public service' film starring Sean Penn and Kid Rock. The goal of the film is to tear down the one-dimensional political stereotypes portrayed by the media by confronting them head on. It reminds us that what really matters is that we're all Americans, with diverse thoughts, opinions and stances on issues. We are millions of unique, individual parts, the sum of which comprise a whole that is the shining beacon of freedom throughout the world. The film reminds us to be proud of our differences, and to never forget that we're all in this together as Americans.

Inspired by James Warner Bellah's "The Valiant Virginians," a 1953 book that had previously been serialized in "The Saturday Evening Post," this series focuses on the impact war has on the young men fighting it. Bellah's stories were about the smaller incidents that impacted the regular soldier, not just the officers, and "The Americans" reflected this sensibility.
